The Ways of Life and Death

14 The wise woman builds her house,
But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.

²He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord,
^(A)But he who is perverse in his ways despises Him.

³In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride,
^(B)But the lips of the wise will preserve them.

⁴Where no oxen are, the ^[a]trough is clean;
But much increase comes by the strength of an ox.

⁵A ^(C)faithful witness does not lie,
But a false witness will utter ^(D)lies.

⁶A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it,
But ^(E)knowledge is easy to him who understands.
⁷Go from the presence of a foolish man,
When you do not perceive in him the lips of ^(F)knowledge.
⁸The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way,
But the folly of fools is deceit.

⁹^(G)Fools mock at ^[b]sin,
But among the upright there is favor.

¹⁰The heart knows its own bitterness,
And a stranger does not share its joy.

Jesus Comes to Zacchaeus’ House

19 Then Jesus entered and passed through ^(A)Jericho. ²Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. ³And he sought to ^(B)see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. ⁴So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. ⁵And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up ^[a]and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, ^[b]make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” ⁶So he ^[c]made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. ⁷But when they saw it, they all ^[d]complained, saying, ^(C)“He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

⁸Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the ^(D)poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by ^(E)false accusation, ^(F)I restore fourfold.”

⁹And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because ^(G)he also is ^(H)a son of Abraham; ¹⁰^(I)for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
